Conditions: Psoriasis
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic, genetic, non-contagious skin condition. It is an immune-mediated disorder which may manifest itself on the skin or in the joints.
What are the symptoms?
There are several different types of psoriasis on the skin, each with its own symptoms. However, common symptoms may include:
  • Thickened, red areas covered with silver/white scales, often on the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back, hands, nails, feet, and genitals
  • Itching
How is it treated?
There is no cure for psoriasis, but outbreaks can be controlled, and cleared for periods of time. Depending on the type, and severity of the psoriasis, treatments may include:
  • Keratolytic moisturizers
  • Topical steroids
  • Topical vitamin D analogs
  • Oral retinoids
  • Oral chemotherapeutic agents
  • Injectable biologic agents (like Enbrel® and Humira®)
  • Sun or ultraviolet light exposure
