Conditions: Should I see a dermatologist?
A dermatologist diagnoses and treats skin, hair, and nail damage or disease and also helps you take proactive steps to stay healthy and attractive.
Wondering if you need to see a dermatologist? Do you have psoriasis, atopic dermatitis/eczema, skin cancer, or acne, or do any of the following concerns apply?
Skin
It's important to pay attention to your body's largest organ - your skin! Talk to your dermatologist if you see anything that concerns you, including:
  • Moles (especially ones that change shape or color)
  • Acne
  • Scars
  • Lines, wrinkles, spots, or lesions
  • Spider and varicose veins
  • Warts, cysts, or other growths
  • Red, scaly, or itchy skin
  • Broken blood vessels
Hair
When is a bad hair day cause for concern? Consider checking with your dermatologist if you notice any of the following:
  • Red, scaly, or itchy rash on scalp
  • Hair loss
  • Excessive hair growth
Nails
The appearance of your nails is an indicator of your general health. You may want to see your dermatologist if you experience any of the following symptoms:
  • Color or shape changes
  • Swelling of surrounding skin
  • Pain
  • Ingrown nails
  • White or black lines
  • Dents or ridges
  • Fungal or bacterial infections
  • Tumors, warts, or other growths
  • Hemorrhages
